A credit check agency is a service that sells a detailed account of a person's payment histories and outstanding balances to a lending facility. With this information, lenders can determine how big of a financial risk the consumer applying for a loan is. Unsecured loan companies, banking institutions, mortgage companies, and insurance firms all work with credit check agencies to determine how much or how little funding to extend. Because financial reporting is a major component of today's financial system, these services have found a niche in the market that has consumers dependent upon their reliability.
A service bureau will gather information about a consumer and compile lists of detailed information, including personal information about where the consumer lives and if the consumers is married or not. This information, along with payment histories and outstanding balances, is evaluated and a score is assigned to the consumer's report by the credit check agency. This number determines whether or not a consumer can buy a car, mortgage, or get the best interest rates and insurance premiums. Credit check agencies contact creditors and continuously compile information about consumers. They will then sell the report to department stores, banks, mortgage companies and other credit extending firms that have clients and customers applying for loans.
Consumers may contact each of the three major reporting services and request a copy of their reports. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) allows consumers to see a copy of their own reports from a credit check agency once a year. This action gives consumers the opportunity to review their reports and look for incorrect items or even identity fraud. Any consumer that has been denied a loan due to a credit reporting agency can also request one free report to check for inaccurate information.
To get a free copy of a report from each of the three major credit check agencies or national bureaus, consumers may log onto the Internet and search for a website that offers information about the three services and guidance in obtaining the free report. The Bible teaches that it is very wise to gather as much knowledge as possible to make wise choices in life. Solomon writes, "The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge" (Proverbs 18:15). Deciding to investigate a report and spending money responsibly is making wise choices. Log on to the Internet to find more information about credit check agencies.
