Halloween themes chosen for carnivals and haunted houses generally involve frightening events that are sure to send chills up and down any spine. And, this year's Halloween theme will need to be even more thrilling than last, as most party goers expectations only increase with the return of every October 31st. This night for fright is a very popular evening for parties and finding the right decor, music, and motif has hosts and hostesses searching the Internet for clever and scary ideas. But some believe that with the increase of violence and scary images being demonstrated on this hallowed eve, this celebration is finding its original roots that involved the Celtic druids worshipping the dead and trying to keep away from the evil spirits.
Each year it seems that celebrations commemorating the Hallowed Eve are becoming more about terror. The scarier the Halloween theme is, the more party-goers are being drawn to it. This shows a lot about the culture, but it also shows the dangers of Halloween. Halloween themes in some ways have gotten out of hand and over the years news reports reveal that violence on this day is continually increasing. Children have been harmed, theft increases, and pets have disappeared.
People from all generations, but especially teenagers find that being scared is somewhat thrilling and therefore fun. Making the whole event fun is what makes Halloween themes so deceiving. The truth of what this day represents is disguised in the terms of an innocent good time. But celebrating a holiday that is deeply rooted in death rituals is not innocent, nor pleasing to God. The death rituals that are practiced go all the way back to the time of the Druids. One of Satan's most effective tools is deception. "For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work." (James 3:16)
But, because our culture has accepted the ideas of this day equating to innocent child's play, changing the way we think about the celebration that honors horrible things will be difficult. Halloween themes are sometimes even disguised as a church carnival. This is not a holiday that should be made to look better, but rather a holiday that Christians ought to take a stance against. A Halloween theme goes back to the day of evil spirits. There is something to be said in avoiding this holiday. "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7) This holiday is not one that Christians should play around with. It is deception, pure and simple.
